Prepare for End of Life in Thailand

The CEC and Lifelong Learning Payap have teamed up to offer a four-part program to provide you all the tools you need to put together the right plan for yourselves

In February, 2024, The CEC, in conjunction with Lifelong Learning Payap, presented a comprehensive 4-Part program over four weeks with the objective of helping us all put together the right plan for ourselves.  The program was a huge success (a sellout) and so many have asked if it will be repeated or could be made available to those who could not attend.  If you would like to see some reviews of the program by attendees, click here

GREAT NEWS!!  We recorded all the sessions (including the Q & A after each session!) and found a way technically to make it available to anyone who is interested.

The initial “Explainer”

If your experience is anything like mine, you have known someone or of someone who has passed away recently.  It is an inevitable milestone for all of us, yet many are uncomfortable thinking about it.  Sadly, a common result of lack of thought and planning is that we leave behind a big mess when we move on to whatever is next.  For example:

  • We might not receive medical care according to our wishes
  • The people we want to make healthcare decisions if we are unable to do so do not have the authority to make those decisions.
  • Our assets and belongings may not end up with whom we want to have them…or even be lost forever
  • Our families and loved ones living outside Thailand may not hear about our passing in a timely manner
  • Our funeral arrangements may not be made according to our wishes
  • We might create much unnecessary work and/or expense for those we leave behind (and doing so when they are grieving)

It is almost certain that a lack of planning on our part will result in some or all of these things happening.  AND IT IS JUST AS CERTAIN THAT A SOLID PLAN WILL HELP YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES AVOID THESE PITFALLS!

We want to help each and every one of you to know how to make a plan that is right FOR YOU.  A plan that will fit your circumstances and your budget

In conjunction with legal and healthcare professionals and the great folks at Life Long Payap, your Chiang Mai Expats Club is preparing a 4-Part series designed to help YOU to:

  1. Understand everything you need to plan for (as well as what you needn’t be concerned about)
  2. Create a comprehensive set of instructions to ensure that you receive medical care according to your wishes – even in the event you become incapacitated and are unable to communicate.
  3. Learn whether or not you should have a Thai Will; and if so, what should it be designed to accomplish
  4. Provide a complete set of instructions and guidance to your loved ones for when you pass; which will ease their workload and ensure things are done according to your wishes.

This 4-Part series consists of four 90-minute sessions over four consecutive weeks.

Our objective is simple:  We want every expat member to have the chance to leave this world with dignity, on their own terms, and to provide for their loved ones in the manner that they desire.  This program will help all of you to accomplish this.  We hope you will join us.

All the best,

Top Ten Reasons People Don’t Have a Comprehensive End-of-Life Plan

You are not alone!  If you ask the people you know, many (most?) will tell you they aren’t fully prepared for when their time comes. Take a look at the list below, and please click on as many as apply to you.  Each link will take you to a web page that will address that particular situation.

  1. It’s not something I want to think about
  2. I don’t know where to start
  3. I already have a will in another country
  4. It doesn’t matter – I’ll be gone
  5. I’ll get around to it later
  6. It’s expensive
  7. I don’t own enough that it would matter
  8. It’s complicated and I don’t know who I can trust
  9. I live by myself and don’t have anyone to leave possessions to
  10. I am going to live forever

We want to help!!  The Chiang Mai Expats Club (CEC) and Payap Lifelong Learning are hosting a four-part series called Prepare for End of Life in Thailand.  The program will be held on four Tuesdays in February.  Our objective is simple:  We want every expat member to have the chance to leave this world with dignity, on their own terms, and to provide for their loved ones in the manner that they desire.  This program will help all of you to accomplish this.  We hope you will join us.

Like Mom always said….”Don’t leave a mess!”

1. It’s not something I want to think about:
It is certainly true that there are more pleasant things to think about. But, the time you spend now to plan for the inevitable will result in real peace of mind from knowing that things will go according to YOUR wishes…and will less trouble for those you leave behind.

2. I don’t know where to start
Very understandable! There are so many things to consider. This program will provide you with the knowledge and tools you need to confidently build a plan that suits your needs.

3. I already have a will in another country
Great! Then you already know the value of a Will. What you might not know is that your will from another country will NOT apply to your goods and possessions in Thailand. Only by having a valid will in Thailand can you ensure thqt your assets and possessions in Thailand will pass to those you choose.

4. It doesn’t matter – I’ll be gone
The truth is that is DOES MATTER!

  • We all listed an emergency contact when we applied for our passports, Your embassy/consulate will contact them. Will your family member know what to do? Will they feel guilty if they do nothing? How would they feel if you have provided no instructions?
  • Regarding the money in your bank account(s)… Woudn’t you prefer that it be left to a charity where it could do some good – rather than remaining unclaimed? The same with your possessions.
  • What if there are friends and acquaintances who might wish to say goodbye in an organized manner?

You can deal with these issues easily and inexpensively. We can show you how.

5. I’ll get around to it later
Maybe you will. But let’s face it; We are all at the stage of our lives when our longevity can’t be taken for granted. This program with provide you with the knowledge and tools to put together a comprehensive plan NOW. We hope you will choose to get it done.

6. It’s expensive
A comprehensive personalized plan does NOT have to be expensive! This program will help you minimize the cost in several ways:

  • We will provide you with the knowledge to know what you need – and don’t need.
  • You will know the specifics of what your will, probate, and healthcare documents need to accomplish; so it will require less time of any professionals you choose to help you.
  • We have partnered with some trusted resources who will offer special pricing for attendees of this program. STAY TUNED for upcoming details.

7. I don’t own enough that it would matter
A good plan is not just about what you own! Your healthcare decisions, funeral arrangements, leases, bank accounts, impact on your friends and family and other factors are also important and need to be planned for.

8. It’s complicated and I don’t know who I can trust
We know there are many things to consider, and it certainly can be tough to know how to start. This program will provide you with the tools to be comfortable in not only getting started; but to create a comprehensive plan that will accomplish your objectives.

  • How to decide what you want to accomplish
  • How to organize your plan
  • What your plan needs to cover
  • What help you will need
  • How to manage and minimize costs

9. I live by myself and don’t have anyone to leave possessions to
May we suggest that you consider “Paying forward”? Your gifts could make a HUGE difference here in your adopted country. There are lots of options:
If you look around you will probably find a charitable organization that could use your gift. The CEC supports several; such as the Children’s Sight Project. If you would like help choosing feel free to ask. We will also work with you to make sure that setting up your gift(s) will not be costly.

10. I am going to live forever:
CONGRATULATIONS! You are the only person who doesn’t need a plan!!
